Discussion
Purpose
The purpose of this discussion is to examine the competencies, leadership skills, and innovative mindset required for advanced practice nurses (APNs) to succeed as entrepreneurs or intrapreneurs. By exploring these competencies, APNs can better understand how to implement evidence-based strategies that support safe, effective, and patient-centered care while contributing to organizational and systemic improvement.
Instructions
Based on this week’s lessons and assigned readings, students are expected to identify a practice problem and propose an evidence-based solution. The proposal should be presented as a pitch to the class audience, clearly highlighting the project’s alignment with innovation, patient-centered safety and quality, and entrepreneurial or intrapreneurial approaches.
As you pitch your idea, consider the following questions:
- How is the project innovative?
The project should present a novel approach to solving a clinical or organizational problem, such as integrating digital health technology or a new care delivery model. Innovation may include leveraging telehealth for underserved populations or implementing predictive analytics to prevent readmissions. - How does it promote safe, high-quality, patient-centered care?
By emphasizing evidence-based interventions, the project must directly enhance patient outcomes, improve safety protocols, and ensure care delivery is personalized to patient needs. - Is the project entrepreneurial or intrapreneurial?
An entrepreneurial project involves creating new business ventures, services, or care delivery models, while an intrapreneurial project focuses on innovating within an existing healthcare organization to improve processes and systems.
Program Competencies
The discussion connects to the following program outcomes (POs):

Course Outcomes
This discussion helps students meet the following course outcomes (COs):
| Course Outcome | Description |
|---|---|
| PCs 2, 4, 5, 6, 8; POs 2, 4, 6, 8 | Apply leadership principles to strengthen interprofessional collaboration and team effectiveness. |
| PCs 1, 3, 6, 7, 8; POs 1, 3, 5, 8 | Translate quality improvement strategies into safe, effective, and patient-centered care initiatives. |
Value of the APN as Entrepreneur or Intrapreneur
Advanced practice nurses have the ability to influence care delivery beyond the bedside. As entrepreneurs, they may develop private practices, telehealth platforms, or wellness clinics. As intrapreneurs, they act within healthcare organizations to design innovative care pathways, streamline workflow, or lead technology-driven initiatives such as electronic health record (EHR) optimization.
Both roles emphasize improving patient outcomes, reducing healthcare disparities, and supporting organizational sustainability. By combining advanced clinical expertise with leadership and business acumen, APNs can successfully contribute to healthcare transformation at multiple levels.
