Greetings, I am Iris, and I am pleased to present a fascinating video that explores interprofessional collaboration and leadership practices in nursing. The coordinated and collaborative efforts of healthcare professionals from different disciplines, such as effective patient communication, leadership, and creating a supportive environment, are referred to as interprofessional collaboration in healthcare. The advantages of interprofessional cooperation include reduced death rates, readmission rates, and prescription errors, as well as improved patient healthcare plan standards (Brashers et al., 2019).

In clinical settings, nurses must establish cooperative connections with other healthcare staff, ultimately improving patient outcomes. I will share my personal experience on interprofessional collaboration and leadership practices. One day, during my working hours in the emergency department, a patient came there suffering from a sudden cardiac arrest. The urgency of the situation required quick and coordinated action.

There needed to be more clarity about who should lead the response in the initial moments. This created moments of hesitation and uncertainty, which, in an emergency, can be harmful. The confused nature of the emergency highlighted communication breakdowns and a lack of clear leadership. After some confusion, our team of healthcare professionals came together with a shared commitment to saving her life. The cardiologist, respiratory therapist, and doctors worked effortlessly, communicating effectively and each taking on their roles with dedication.

This interprofessional collaboration allowed us to stabilize the patient and save her life. This collaborative tale underscores the incredible impact of teamwork, where each healthcare professional’s unique expertise weaved together to create a comprehensive care journey, ultimately leading to improved patient outcomes and a significantly better quality of life.

Reflection on an Interdisciplinary Collaboration Experience

The experience above has some positive and negative aspects, which are the following:

Positive Aspects

As a nurse, I was crucial in facilitating effective communication and coordination among the healthcare team. Interprofessional collaboration was an example of healthcare professionals uniting to save a patient’s life. Their combined expertise ensured a comprehensive assessment and rapid decision-making. Effective communication played a vital role in ensuring clarity in roles and responsibilities. Despite initial leadership challenges, the team ultimately unified, highlighting their adaptability and commitment to prioritizing patient care.

Negative Aspects

Initially, there needed to be more evident leadership, causing hesitation and uncertainty among team members. This highlights the importance of having designated emergency leaders to ensure a well-coordinated response. Communication issues at the outset of the emergency led to some confusion and delays. In high-stress situations, misunderstandings can occur, emphasizing the need for effective communication protocols. The scenario revealed the need for better preparation and training. Emergency response training should emphasize clear leadership roles and effective communication to avoid confusion and promote efficient teamwork.

Reflective Nursing Practice for Improved Future Decisions

Reflective nursing promotes vital communication, better patient care, and professional development. Better outcomes for patients and medical teams result from allowing nurses to reflect on their experiences, make educated choices, and constantly improve their abilities. The critical self-reflection and shared learning of healthcare professionals is conducted through techniques like group meetings, interviews, and journaling.

Combining a collaborative approach with action research equips nurses to improve continuous care quality, ultimately increasing patient well-being. The convergence of self-improvement and evidence-based care is where reflective nursing practice excels, suggesting significant changes in the profession (Moreno et al., 2022).

Poor Collaboration in Inefficient Management of Human And Financial Resources

After going through the Vila Health scenario, it became evident that effective interdisciplinary collaboration in healthcare is necessary to streamline the workflow. In this case, the poor collaboration from the higher management created an agitated and tiring environment for all human resources, especially the nursing staff.

The absence of communication within a healthcare team leads to delayed responses, endangered patients, and a lack of trust among team members. A former study by Nyaaba et al. (2020) showed that the inability to communicate and poor collaboration is one of the reasons behind the hypertension of health professionals. These factors in the Vila health case also contribute to job dissatisfaction and stressful work environments. Also, the over-strained nurses can not provide excellent care to patients.

Financial Resources

Financial challenges in healthcare often stem from poor collaboration among healthcare professionals and departments. In the vila health scenario, the lack of communication and interprofessional collaboration created financial liabilities such as delayed projects. Implementing the EHR system in Vila Health increased the time for data management as nurses found difficulties in using this system.

Financial challenges in healthcare due to poor collaboration highlight how healthcare funding, financing models, and human resources can impact access to healthcare services. These factors can lead to disparities in access, quality, and cost of care. Addressing these challenges necessitates multidimensional approaches involving government policies, healthcare providers, and communities to ensure equitable and accessible healthcare for all individuals (Cu et al., 2021).

Best-Practice Leadership Strategies

Best-practice leadership strategies in interprofessional collaboration involve the development of effective teamwork and communication among professionals from various disciplines. Some best practice leadership strategies are:

Strong Leadership

Strong leadership is crucial in multi-professional collaboration as it provides direction, ensures adherence to best-practice strategies, and fosters a cohesive team environment. According to Watson (2020), effective leadership empowers professionals to work collaboratively, navigate challenges, and ultimately deliver higher-quality care and services. Practical and positive leadership is essential for successive communication among team members.

In the vila health scenario, this factor was missing, due to which the nursing facility faced problems. Timely and effective communication from leadership to middle management regarding implementing the EHR system could have improved outcomes. With their communication, they can be better informed about the actual needs of the nursing facility.

 Patient-Centered Care

Patient-centered care enhances best-practice leadership in Vila Health and EHR implementation. A study by Kwame & Petrucka (2021) presented that patient-centered care underlines the importance of consultation with patient’s needs, effective communication, and individualized care to improve healthcare outcomes. It also addresses the institutional and personal barriers to creating a patient-centered care and communication continuum (PC4 Model). Patient-centered care leadership techniques could have simplified EHR implementation by focusing on patient needs, efficient data access, and care continuity.

An interdisciplinary team’s strategy could have helped overcome specific challenges during the Vila Health EHR system implementation. This can minimize the system’s complexity and make it easy to use. The VICTORY Model reveals that interdisciplinary teams represent a best-practice approach to promoting collaboration. This model emphasizes diversity, open communication, risk-taking, and cognitive tools to harness the collective creativity of teams, making them a powerful force for innovation and problem-solving across various disciplines and cultures (Tang et al., 2019).

Using this collaborative technique in interdisciplinary teams at Vila Health could improve communication between different departments. It will encourage their inclusive decision-making and provide individualized training, resulting in a smoother EHR adoption process and better patient care in Vila Health.

Clear Communication

When healthcare teams engage in clear and proficient communication, they enhance their ability to work amicably towards common goals. This leads to improved patient care to their specific needs, develops shared decision-making processes, supports resolving conflicts, and simplifies difficult discussions. It also ensures that information is easily understood and acted upon by clear communication through in-person encounters, promoting effective teamwork and healthcare outcomes (Coleman, 2020).

Clear communication in interdisciplinary collaboration needed to be included in the Vila Health scenario, which causes problems for all human resources. Clear communication in the Vila Health scenario could have encouraged transparency and ensured that all team members were on the same page, resulting in a better grasp of project objectives. This assists in addressing complaints, providing essential training, and instilling a feeling of ownership in employees. Applying this strategy will make the EHR implementation process smoother with higher user adoption.

Conclusion

Effective interdisciplinary collaboration is paramount in healthcare. It is underpinned by robust leadership, patient-centered care, and clear communication. By adopting best-practice strategies, we can enhance patient outcomes, optimize resource management, and ensure financial sustainability. Addressing and overcoming the challenges of poor collaboration in the healthcare sector is crucial. Thank you.
