Strengths-to-Strategies, Curriculum Vitae, and Action Plan
Leadership is not an innate quality but a set of skills developed through education, personal growth, and real-world experience. Both formal training and informal exposure shape an individual’s ability to lead effectively. Within today’s health care system, strong leadership is essential to foster innovation and sustain change. This paper explores my leadership journey by identifying personal strengths and weaknesses, developing strategies for improvement, reviewing my curriculum vitae (CV), and outlining an action plan. Through this structured self-assessment, I intend to enhance my leadership competencies and better position myself to contribute to the advancement of health care.
Strengths-to-Strategy Plan
Self-reflection is a critical step in professional growth. The following section outlines my leadership strengths and weaknesses, while also providing strategies to convert weaknesses into strengths and leverage the capabilities of others.
Leadership Strengths
The Zenger-Folkman leadership assessment highlights communication, motivation, and teamwork as my strongest areas. Each of these plays an essential role in nursing leadership:
- Communication: Effective communication requires active listening and adapting speech to different audiences, whether interacting with patients, administrators, or colleagues. By focusing on attentive listening and adjusting my tone and style, I ensure clarity and trust in professional exchanges (Fisher, 2017).
- Inspiration and Motivation: As a leader, I strive to inspire others by setting a positive example and recognizing achievements. Encouragement and recognition foster pride in work, leading to improved outcomes.
- Teamwork: Collaborative practice is the foundation of nursing. I actively support colleagues, assist those struggling, and contribute to group tasks. This reinforces my role as a team member rather than as someone above the team.
Leadership Weaknesses
Despite my strengths, I also face challenges. According to the Zenger-Folkman framework, my weaker areas include decision-making, long-term goal setting, and maintaining consistent focus on outcomes.
| Weakness | Impact on Leadership |
|---|---|
| Indecisiveness | Creates uncertainty and delays in implementing best practices. |
| Difficulty in long-term goals | Limits strategic vision and the ability to set ambitious targets for teams. |
| Complacency in outcomes | Leads to stagnation, as progress is overlooked when short-term goals appear successful. |
These weaknesses often stem from self-doubt and fear of failure. However, addressing them is vital to becoming a confident and effective leader.
Strategies to Turn Weaknesses into Strengths
To overcome these challenges, I plan to adopt several strategies:
- Mentorship and Preceptorship: Observing seasoned leaders will provide insights into effective decision-making and long-term planning.
- Professional Development: Attending leadership seminars and reading evidence-based literature will enhance my skill set.
- Peer Support: Regular feedback sessions with colleagues will allow me to identify blind spots and measure progress.

Strategies for Leveraging the Strengths of Others
Recognizing that leadership is not solitary, I plan to maximize team strengths by:
- Delegating tasks such as long-term strategic planning to committees for broader input.
- Assigning responsibility for progress monitoring to capable team members.
- Encouraging collaboration so that organizational goals are achieved collectively rather than individually.
Curriculum Vitae (CV)
A curriculum vitae (CV) serves as a reflection of professional growth. Using the Chamberlain University template, I have structured my CV to highlight education, certifications, professional experience, and achievements (see Appendix). While the CV illustrates areas of strength, it also highlights gaps that provide direction for further professional development.
Action Plan
The action plan is designed to address gaps identified in my CV and create opportunities for advancement as a nurse practitioner and doctor of nursing practice (DNP).
CV Analysis
Upon reviewing my CV, I recognize my contributions to preceptorship and the honor of serving as adjunct faculty at multiple institutions. These experiences have strengthened my teaching skills and enhanced my ability to mentor future providers. However, I also identify areas needing growth—particularly contributions to academic research, publications, and professional presentations.
Plan to Strengthen My CV
To improve my professional profile, I intend to:
- Present at a national or regional nursing conference within three years.
- Join a research team and contribute to scholarly publications within five years.
- Participate actively in professional organizations such as ACNM and NPWH to broaden my network.
Plan to Turn Opportunities into Strengths
Recognizing the importance of continuous learning, I will:
- Attend annual leadership seminars at professional conferences.
- Engage in mentorship programs at my workplace and sister facilities.
- Focus on addressing personal weaknesses such as indecisiveness by practicing structured decision-making frameworks.
Conclusion
In an evolving health care landscape, leadership from doctorally prepared nurses is pivotal to achieving improved outcomes. This reflection highlights my strengths in communication, teamwork, and motivation, while also acknowledging my weaknesses in decision-making and long-term vision. Through mentorship, professional development, and leveraging the strengths of others, I can transform these weaknesses into opportunities for growth. My CV provides a roadmap for my professional journey, while my action plan outlines tangible steps to strengthen my leadership and scholarly contributions. By remaining committed to lifelong learning and leadership excellence, I aim to play a meaningful role in advancing evidence-based nursing practice.
