Discussion
The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) self-assessment has provided valuable insight into both my professional strengths and the areas that require further development. I believe it is essential for healthcare professionals to periodically re-evaluate their skills, regardless of how long they have been in their role, to ensure continuous growth and adherence to evolving standards of care.
Upon reviewing my assessment results, I identified specific areas where I can enhance my practice—particularly in implementing safeguards and decision-making support tools integrated into patient care technologies and information systems. These tools are essential in maintaining a safe and efficient care environment. While I already utilize some aspects of these systems in my daily practice, I recognize that my familiarity with nursing informatics is limited compared to other areas of my professional expertise.
Strengths Identified
Despite my limited formal knowledge in informatics, I realized that I possess practical competencies that contribute to patient care. For instance, my colleagues often approach me for assistance with electronic health record (EHR) navigation, troubleshooting software issues, or locating specific patient data within the system. This reflects not only my computer literacy but also my ability to apply technology-based problem-solving in real time.
In the course materials, it is emphasized that “this knowledge enables nurses to retrieve and manage the information to improve patient safety and quality outcomes based on evidence of best practice” (Chamberlain College of Nursing, 2022). This aligns with my daily nursing activities, such as documenting and analyzing patient vital signs and assessments, which are critical components of data-driven decision-making.
Areas for Improvement
One of my primary development goals is to deepen my understanding of clinical decision support systems (CDSS), data analytics, and the broader field of health informatics. Darvish et al. (2014) note that nurses are at the frontline of patient care and interact with technology more frequently than many other healthcare professionals. This interaction, when approached with a positive mindset and adequate training, can significantly improve nursing productivity and patient outcomes.
NR 361 Week 1 Discussion
To organize my self-assessment findings, I have summarized them in the table below:
Self-Assessment Summary
| Category | Strengths | Areas for Improvement |
|---|---|---|
| Computer Literacy | Confident in basic and advanced computer functions; serve as a resource for colleagues in system navigation | Expand skills in specialized health informatics software |
| Use of Patient Care Technologies | Proficient in documenting patient assessments, vital signs, and medical histories in EHR | Learn advanced functionalities of EHR, such as embedded decision-making tools |
| Understanding of Nursing Informatics | Practical application in daily workflow without formal training | Gain theoretical and evidence-based knowledge to connect technology use with nursing best practices |
| Decision-Making Support Tools | Occasionally use alerts and reminders within EHR for patient safety | Develop expertise in using CDSS to enhance evidence-based decision-making |
| Data Analysis and Quality Improvement Skills | Recognize the importance of data for patient outcomes | Improve ability to interpret large datasets for identifying trends and implementing quality improvement interventions |
Conclusion
Informatics is an integral part of modern nursing practice, directly influencing the quality, safety, and efficiency of patient care. My AACN self-assessment results reaffirm the need to continue building competence in this area, particularly in decision support systems and advanced EHR functionalities. Enhancing these skills will not only strengthen my professional capabilities but also contribute to better patient outcomes and healthcare team collaboration.
