Week 5 Discussion: Debriefing of Week 4
iHuman Neurovascular Assessment (Graded)
Purpose
The primary aim of this debriefing is to revisit and critically analyze the experiences gained from completing the Week 4 iHuman Neurovascular Assessment activity. This reflection allows for collaborative engagement with both faculty and peers. During these debriefings, students are encouraged to:
- Thoughtfully reflect on their simulation experience.
- Discuss what aspects were effective and explore potential alternative strategies.
- Participate in constructive dialogue with classmates.
- Present opinions in a clear, logical, and professional manner.
Course Outcomes
This debriefing activity supports the achievement of the following course outcomes:
| Course Outcome | Description | Program Outcome (PO) |
|---|---|---|
| CO 2 | Distinguish between normal and abnormal health assessment findings. | PO 4 |
| CO 3 | Identify physical, psychosocial, cultural, and spiritual factors influencing an individual’s health status. | PO 1 |
| CO 4 | Apply effective communication techniques during health assessments and documentation. | PO 3 |
Due Date
- Timeframe: From Sunday of the assigned week through the following Sunday.
- Requirements:
- Contribute to the discussion at least two times.
- Post on two separate days.
Points Possible
This discussion is valued at 50 points.
Directions
Debriefing requires reflective thinking about personal experiences in the virtual simulation. Students are expected to:
- Demonstrate a solid grasp of weekly concepts.
- Actively participate in meaningful discussions with classmates and/or the instructor.
- Communicate opinions in a clear, professional manner.
Best Practices:
- Contribute early in the week to foster active discussion.
- Review posts throughout the week to enhance learning from peers.
- Engage with different classmates each week.
Debriefing: Week 4 iHuman Neurovascular Assessment (Athena Washington Case)
What went well during the simulation?
Throughout the simulation, I noticed increased ease in navigating the iHuman platform compared to previous weeks. Although neurovascular assessments are not my strongest area due to limited clinical exposure, completing the preparatory work beforehand improved my confidence. The scenario felt moderately realistic; however, the patient’s brief responses added complexity to the neurological assessment process, simulating real-world challenges when obtaining a comprehensive history. My prior knowledge in related assessments enabled me to maintain a steady and systematic approach during the activity.

What would I do differently next time?
For future simulations, I plan to use a different device and web browser to prevent the technical difficulties I encountered—such as malfunctioning audio and incomplete blood pressure cuff inflation. These issues were consistent with problems experienced in prior weeks, which may have impacted the immersive nature of the scenario. Surprisingly, despite my uncertainty about my neurovascular skills, my iHuman score was higher than expected. This result highlighted that my theoretical knowledge was stronger than I had assumed, though hands-on practice remains essential.
What did I learn from this simulation?
This experience reinforced the importance of thoroughness, patience, and methodical assessments in neurological care. I realized that much of my prior training resurfaced during the activity, giving me greater confidence in handling future neuro ICU cases. By slowing down and focusing on accuracy rather than speed, I was able to achieve a more comprehensive assessment. However, persistent technical issues with the simulation platform limited the full benefit of the exercise. This reinforces the need for adaptability in both clinical and simulated environments.
