Nurses play a pivotal role in assessing and evaluating patient care quality within the healthcare setting. Operating in a constantly evolving environment, nurses adapt to changes in patient conditions and advancements in medical practices. Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) serves as the framework for assessing recent innovations, best practices, and emerging literature to ensure state-of-the-art patient care (Alatawi et al., 2020).

Analysis of Criteria and Process for Implementing EBP

EBP follows a four-step process to address clinical challenges:

  1. Assessment of the patient’s clinical problem.
  2. Exploration of related literature.
  3. Appraisal of pertinent articles.
  4. Execution and dissemination of gathered information.

Nurses formulate clinical problem statements based on assessments and diagnoses, conduct comprehensive literature reviews, and implement identified treatment protocols (Alatawi et al., 2020).

Barriers to Implementing EBP

Alatawi et al. (2020) identify individual and organizational barriers to EBP adoption. Individual barriers include healthcare providers’ professional competence and communication with patients. Organizational barriers relate to resource allocation and budget constraints within healthcare institutions.

Importance of Scholarship for EBP Research

Programs like Magnet® support evidence-based nursing practice and research, contributing to staff development and healthcare enhancement (Wentland & Hinderer, 2020; Whalen et al., 2020).

Criteria for Conducting Evidence-Based Nursing Practice

Saunders et al. (2019) outline inclusion and exclusion criteria for EBP research, emphasizing the importance of addressing biases, evaluating study quality, and focusing on multiple outcomes.

Clinical Questions Related to EBP

Speroni et al. (2020) highlight the prevalence of EBP adoption in Magnet-recognized hospitals, with the Iowa Model being commonly employed. Chiwaula et al. (2021) demonstrate the Iowa Model’s effectiveness in managing fever in ICU patients through technology-driven interventions.

Knowledge Gap in Study

Chiwaula et al. (2021) acknowledge a knowledge gap regarding patient consent in ICU settings, emphasizing the need to adapt EBP guidelines to individual patient needs.

Ethical and Regulatory Concerns for EBP

Ethical considerations include patient consent and adherence to ethical principles such as respect for autonomy and beneficence (Tu & Gao, 2021). Regulatory compliance with FDA recommendations is essential for implementing evidence-based technologies (Chipps et al., 2020).

Conclusion

EBP offers solutions to emerging healthcare challenges but requires rigorous research efforts and adherence to ethical standards. Nurses must prioritize patient confidentiality and autonomy while implementing EBP practices.
