Self-Assessment of NLN Core Competencies for Nurse Educators

The self-assessment of NLN Core Competencies provides nurse educators with an opportunity to reflect on their skills, knowledge, and areas for improvement at the start and end of the course. During Week 1, students are required to complete a self-assessment to determine their confidence level in meeting each sub-competency. This process also requires identifying course outcomes and providing specific examples of how these outcomes will be addressed.

By Week 8, students reassess their competency levels and demonstrate how they applied the outcomes through concrete examples. The goal is to foster professional growth by engaging in reflective practice and aligning course outcomes with the NLN Nurse Educator Core Competencies.

The confidence rating system is structured as follows:

  • 1 = No confidence; requires significant education and practice.
  • 2 = Some confidence; needs additional learning and practice.
  • 3 = High confidence; only requires ongoing professional development.

It is important to recognize that students are still in the developmental stage, and achieving level 3 in all competencies is not expected by the end of the course.

NLN Competency III: Use Assessment and Evaluation Strategies

Nurse educators are responsible for employing a range of assessment and evaluation strategies in different learning environments such as classrooms, laboratories, and clinical settings. These strategies should address multiple domains of learning, including cognitive, psychomotor, and affective domains. The competency requires educators to integrate evidence-based practices, provide constructive feedback, and utilize evaluation data to enhance the teaching-learning process.

Reflection on Professional Growth

Engaging in this structured self-assessment enables students to actively monitor their progress and link theoretical concepts with practical applications. By Week 8, comparing the initial and final self-assessments provides valuable insight into the areas of growth, knowledge gained, and the effective use of evidence-based strategies in teaching and evaluation.

This process not only enhances individual professional development but also contributes to the preparation of competent nurse educators who can guide future nurses effectively.
