The foremost concern with convenience sampling is the risk of bias. Since participants are not randomly chosen, the sample may not represent the target population accurately. This can severely limit the generalizability of the study’s results (Houser, 2018). For example, in healthcare research, if convenience sampling is applied within a single hospital or demographic, the findings might only reflect that limited context. Extending such results to other populations without proper caution could lead to misleading interpretations.
Another critical issue is selection bias—where researchers may unintentionally choose individuals who align with their expectations or hypotheses. This can occur consciously or unconsciously, and it significantly threatens the internal validity of the study (Emerson, 2015).
