Its popularity is largely due to its cost-effectiveness, time efficiency, and practicality in various settings. However, this method comes with substantial drawbacks, particularly in the realm of research validity and reliability.

The foremost concern with convenience sampling is the risk of bias. Since participants are not randomly chosen, the sample may not represent the target population accurately. This can severely limit the generalizability of the study’s results (Houser, 2018). For example, in healthcare research, if convenience sampling is applied within a single hospital or demographic, the findings might only reflect that limited context. Extending such results to other populations without proper caution could lead to misleading interpretations.

Another critical issue is selection bias—where researchers may unintentionally choose individuals who align with their expectations or hypotheses. This can occur consciously or unconsciously, and it significantly threatens the internal validity of the study (Emerson, 2015).

Practical Example and Limitations

A practical illustration of convenience sampling’s limitations is found in a study evaluating nurses’ perceptions of family violence (FV) screening. This research took place in a rural healthcare system and included nurses who were readily available and had completed an online training program. Although results indicated that nurses valued FV screening tools, the sample’s narrow scope restricted the generalizability of the findings to other, more diverse settings (Durham-Pressley, 2018).

(2014) stress that research involving human participants requires adherence to ethical guidelines—including informed consent, privacy protection, and minimizing potential harm. Even with convenience samples, these principles must be upheld to preserve research integrity and safeguard participant rights.

Convenience sampling—also called availability sampling—is widely used in healthcare due to its speed and cost-efficiency. However, it is frequently criticized for introducing sampling bias and reducing external validity.

Practical Example in Sickle Cell Research

An example is found in research on hydroxyurea treatment for sickle cell disease. Restricting participation to patients diagnosed with the disease is essential for valid results. If individuals without sickle cell disease or pain symptoms were included, positive treatment responses could be misinterpreted as drug efficacy. Additionally, if such research excluded certain racial or ethnic groups—such as those outside sub-Saharan Africa—it could introduce cultural or biological biases, reducing relevance to more diverse populations (Houser, 2018).

Sampling Bias in Pharmacy Settings

In a pharmacy scenario, surveying existing patients on their preference for a 90-day medication supply might yield biased results. Factors like insurance coverage and co-payment structures could skew preferences, making them unrepresentative of the general population. During crises such as Hurricane Harvey, temporary changes in patient demographics (e.g., displaced individuals using unaffected pharmacies) could further distort results (Houser, 2018).

Final Considerations in Healthcare Research

Although convenience sampling is often unavoidable in healthcare due to resource and time limitations, researchers must remain transparent about its weaknesses. Strategies such as carefully defined inclusion/exclusion criteria, random assignment within the convenience group, and triangulating data from multiple sources can help offset some of these limitations.
