Problems That Impact Populations and the Role of Social Media
Social challenges that affect public health are numerous, ranging from environmental hazards to interpersonal violence. In the modern era, social media has become a major influencer in shaping public perception and behavior regarding these issues. This discussion focuses on substance use and abuse, specifically among adolescents, and explores how online platforms contribute to its prevalence and how community health interventions can address the problem.
1. Choose one of the following population health problems to focus on:
Substance Use and/or Abuse
Substance use, particularly among youth, has emerged as a pressing concern. While drug and alcohol misuse has historically been a public health problem, recent trends reveal that younger populations are increasingly exposed to risky behaviors through digital channels. Social media influencers, celebrities, and viral trends can glamorize substance use, making it appear as a pathway to popularity or self-expression. Adolescents, due to ongoing brain development and psychosocial changes, are especially vulnerable to addiction and its associated harms (Dykes & Casker, 2021).
2. Research and share an overview of the current data on this population health problem specific to your community.
In Los Angeles County, substance abuse statistics are alarming. According to the County Health Rankings & Roadmaps, there were 3,172 drug overdose deaths in recent years—three times higher than the average across other California counties.
This disproportionate impact suggests an urgent need for targeted interventions that address local socio-economic and cultural factors, as well as the influence of online platforms.

Table 1 provides a comparison between Los Angeles County and statewide overdose statistics.
| Location | Drug Overdose Deaths | Relative Rate (to CA average) |
|---|---|---|
| Los Angeles County | 3,172 | 3× higher |
| California (average) | ~1,057 | Baseline |
3. Then take a moment to review the Twitter feed for compelling Tweets that may have an impact on or discuss the population health problem.
A review of Twitter shows numerous posts warning about the dangers of drug use, many of which use humor, shock value, or personal stories to connect with younger audiences. Hashtags like #StayDrugFree and #SoberIsCool are commonly used to spread awareness. However, equally present are harmful messages trivializing drug use, which reinforces the need for proactive digital literacy and prevention strategies.
4. Give an overview of any agency, organization, person, or affiliation that is addressing the population health problem.
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) plays a leading role in addressing substance abuse nationwide. As a branch of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, SAMHSA’s mission is to provide leadership, policy guidance, funding, and resources to advance prevention, treatment, and recovery services. Their vision encompasses reducing the impact of substance misuse and mental illness on individuals, families, and communities through evidence-based programs (SAMHSA, n.d.).
5. How could a community health nurse collaborate with the agency, organization, person, or affiliation to address the population health problem?
Community health nurses can collaborate with SAMHSA in several ways:
- Outreach and Education: Partner with schools to deliver substance abuse prevention workshops using SAMHSA’s educational materials.
- Resource Navigation: Connect individuals and families to SAMHSA helplines, treatment locators, and online resources.
- Social Media Campaigns: Develop youth-focused digital campaigns using SAMHSA data and prevention messages to counteract harmful online narratives.
- Screening and Early Intervention: Incorporate SAMHSA screening tools in community clinics to identify at-risk individuals early.
6. Compose a 280-character or fewer Tweet that describes what you have shared with the class.
Drugs don’t make you “cool”—they risk your life. In LA County, overdose deaths are 3× higher than the CA average. Let’s change the story. Get help: samhsa.gov #DrugsArentCool #StayDrugFree #SoberIsCool
7. Note
A Twitter account is not required to complete this task; this Tweet is an example of how the message can be condensed for social media impact.
