Personal Improvement Project

Improvement projects are dynamic and continuously evolving processes that can be addressed through multiple methodologies (Johnson & Sollecito, 2020). Typically, these projects involve a structured approach: defining clear objectives, gathering and measuring relevant data, analyzing findings, adjusting strategies as needed, and implementing final changes. This paper presents an overview of my personal improvement project, detailing its goals, methods, data collection techniques, and final results.

Aim

What was the goal of my personal improvement project?

The main objective was to increase my daily water consumption to 56 ounces within four weeks. I designed a gradual, incremental plan starting with 32 ounces on the first week and increasing by 8 ounces each subsequent week until the target was achieved in week four. Prior to this initiative, my hydration was inconsistent, fluctuating between 8 and 40 ounces daily. Establishing a consistent hydration routine was essential because inadequate water intake adversely affects both physical health and cognitive functioning (Rodger et al., 2023).

Process Analysis

How did I implement and monitor my water intake increase?

To facilitate this behavior change, I developed a process map—a visual and systematic tool to guide the steps involved in adopting new habits (Antonacci et al., 2018). The first step involved acquiring the right resources, including a calibrated water bottle marked in ounces to ensure accurate tracking. I also kept a planner to document my daily intake and communicated my hydration goals to family members for support and accountability.

How did I track my progress?

I monitored my daily water intake by recording the amount consumed in a planner, which I kept accessible despite a busy schedule. The water bottle’s ounce markings allowed for precise measurement. Its large size minimized the need for frequent refills, making it easier to maintain consistency throughout the day.

Changes and Outcomes

What changes helped me reach my goal, and what were the outcomes?

Gradually increasing my intake week by week made the overall goal manageable and less daunting. Celebrating incremental milestones provided motivation to continue. Using a large water bottle reduced interruptions due to frequent refills, which was a key factor supporting my success. Reflecting on the experience, I plan to acquire an additional bottle for my bedside to encourage hydration during early mornings when I’m often preoccupied.

What did I learn from this project?

Initially, consuming 56 ounces daily appeared overwhelming. However, by breaking the target into smaller weekly goals, the task became achievable—a strategy that I also find useful in academic and professional tasks. The most significant challenge was remembering to drink water, rather than the act itself, echoing findings by Rodger et al. (2023), who identified forgetfulness as a common barrier to maintaining hydration. Maintaining consistent hydration improved my well-being by reducing headaches and fatigue, consistent with research linking dehydration to negative mood and tiredness (Rodger et al., 2021). I intend to sustain this daily goal and continue using the large water bottle to support this habit.

How can this experience inform quality improvement projects in healthcare?

This personal improvement project deepened my understanding of quality improvement (QI) within nursing and healthcare settings. QI efforts at both unit and organizational levels require collaboration to enhance patient care, professional growth, and system efficiency (Johnson & Sollecito, 2020). Changes at the unit level are often smaller, more focused, and involve frontline staff and managers, whereas organizational changes are broader and involve multiple stakeholders (Gadolin, 2017).

This personal improvement project enhanced my hydration habits and provided meaningful insights into the core principles of quality improvement. The experience highlighted the importance of realistic goal-setting, incremental progress, and effective tracking—principles I plan to apply in future nursing leadership roles to foster successful quality improvement initiatives.
