Joints, also known as articulations, are the anatomical points at which two or more bones connect. They are vital for both bodily stability and mobility. Joints can be categorized in two primary ways: structurally and functionally. Structurally, joints are classified as fibrous, cartilaginous, or synovial, based on the connective tissue type and whether a joint cavity is present. Functionally, joints are grouped as synarthroses (immobile), amphiarthroses (partially movable), or diarthroses (freely movable), which reflect their range of motion (Saladin, Gan, & Cushman, 2021).

Synovial joints, especially hinge joints, are designed to permit movement in one direction, such as flexion and extension. These types of joints include the elbow, knee, interphalangeal joints of the fingers and toes, and the ankle joint (tibiotalar joint). The knee joint, a classic example of a hinge joint, allows for pivotal movement necessary for walking, running, and other physical activities (Saladin, Gan, & Cushman, 2021).

What is the function of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in the knee?

The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is a critical structure in the knee, situated diagonally in the center of the joint, connecting the femur to the tibia. Its primary function is to prevent the tibia from sliding forward relative to the femur, maintaining the alignment and integrity of the knee. Additionally, the ACL contributes to rotational control of the knee and plays a significant role in preventing hyperextension. Together with the posterior cruciate ligament (PCL), the ACL ensures proper weight distribution across the knee joint and protects other supporting ligaments from excessive stress or damage (Saladin, Gan, & Cushman, 2021).
